Guru Gobind Singh was the tenth and final Guru of the Sikhs. He was born in 1666 in Patna, India, and succeeded his father Guru Tegh Bahadur as the spiritual leader of the Sikhs at a young age.
Guru Gobind Singh is best known for his military and political leadership during a time of great oppression and persecution of the Sikhs by the Mughal Empire. He organized the Sikhs into a martial community, the Khalsa, to defend themselves and others against injustice and oppression.
In addition to his military leadership, Guru Gobind Singh is also known for his spiritual contributions to Sikhism. He composed several important works, including the Dasam Granth, which contains his teachings and compositions, and the Zafarnama, a letter addressed to the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
Guru Gobind Singh’s birthday, known as Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti, is celebrated every year by Sikhs on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Poh (December/January).
