Dragonfly Closeup Photo: #Sarbography

After a long time, I did some proper photography today. This dragonfly was sitting on our clothesline in the backyard in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. I love closeup-macro photography, besides street photography. I hope I will share more soon. #NikonBridge #Malaysia

Dragonflies are fascinating insects that belong to the order Odonata and are characterized by their long, slender bodies and two pairs of wings. They are found near freshwater habitats throughout most of the world and are known for their predatory behavior. Dragonflies are agile fliers and are capable of highly accurate aerial ambushes. They have a uniquely complex mode of reproduction involving indirect insemination, delayed fertilization, and sperm competition.

Dragonflies are often confused with damselflies, which are similar in body plan but usually lighter in build. However, the wings of most dragonflies are held flat and away from the body, while damselflies hold their wings folded at rest, along or above the abdomen. Dragonflies are also larger and more robust than damselflies.

Adult dragonflies are characterized by a pair of large, multifaceted, compound eyes, two pairs of strong, transparent wings, sometimes with colored patches, and an elongated body. Many dragonflies have brilliant iridescent or metallic colors produced by structural coloration, making them conspicuous in flight. An adult dragonfly’s compound eyes have nearly 24,000 ommatidia each, and they can see in 360 degrees, with nearly 80% of the insect’s brain dedicated to sight. Dragonfly vision is thought to be like slow motion for humans, as they see around 200 images per second.

Dragonflies are important predators in freshwater ecosystems and are known to feed on a variety of prey, including mosquitoes, flies, and other small insects. They are also preyed upon by birds, fish, and other larger insects. Some species of dragonflies are migratory and can travel long distances across oceans.

In conclusion, dragonflies are fascinating insects that play an important role in freshwater ecosystems. They are agile fliers, skilled predators, and have a uniquely complex mode of reproduction. Their brilliant colors and intricate wing patterns make them a joy to watch, and their importance in the ecosystem cannot be overstated.

I hope you liked this dragonfly closeup photo and the write-up about them.
