Wisdom and Happiness

Wisdom and Happiness

Socrates said that “Wisdom is the key to happiness”.
What do you think wisdom is?
Where does it come from?
What ever we learn in school, college or from teachers is not wisdom. That probably is knowledge. Everyday, on social media, we post a lot of good quotes of some great and not so great people. How many of us actually try to really understand them and follow them? We post them because we have liked them is certain. Let us not just preach, let us act on them. When we act on them, that is when we are taken to what some call “The School of Hard Knocks” and that is where we get wisdom and in turn happiness.

Wishing you all the happiness !

The Imperfect Gandhi

M.K.GandhiThe Imperfect Gandhi
(Sarbjit Singh)

No one is perfect. Our flaws make us human. Flaws of others should not decrease our appreciation of their qualities that we admire. Like everyone else M.K.Gandhi had a number of flaws too which he himself penned down. One of the infamous ones he was ashamed of was the fact that while his father was dying, he was making love to his wife in the next room. He was human. I still admire his courage, his compassion, his grit, his tolerence & his inability to say anything but the truth.

Origin of God : Shahid Bhagat Singh

“As regard the origin of God, my thought is that man created God in his imagination when he realised his weaknesses, limitations and shortcomings. In this way he got the courage to face all the trying circumstances and to meet all dangers that might occur in his life and also to restrain his outbursts in prosperity and affluence. God, with his whimsical laws and parental generosity was painted with variegated colours of imagination. He was used as a deterrent factor when his fury and his laws were repeatedly propagated so that man might not become a danger to society. He was the cry of the distressed soul for he was believed to stand as father and mother, sister and brother, brother and friend when in time of distress a man was left alone and helpless. He was Almighty and could do anything. The idea of God is helpful to a man in distress.”

Grumpy And Negative is Good !

“Grumpy And Negative is Good !”

Many of us like to write, say or share motivational stuff about being positive and always looking to the ‘brighter’ side of life. Read somewhere a counter view that being grumpy, whiny and negative may actually make life easier. If we always expect good things to happen to us, we’ll be really disappointed as life in reality is full of ‘crap’. On the other hand, if we expect ‘bad things” or always look at worst-case-scenario , it would probably not be as disappointing as we were expecting it anyway. If however the situation is better than our expected worst-case-scenario, it might just make us a bit happier. Happy situation shall take you to the moon 🙂

Life is meaningless …

Evening Sky

Evening Sky

We have most of the time been given to believe by many philosophers, sages and gurus that we should strive to search for the meaning of life. Have we ever stopped to think that life could be just meaningless? A French philosopher Albert Camus (1913-1960) did think that life is inherently meaningless. He believed that only embracing this idea of life being absurd and meaningless are we capable of living it as fully as possible.

One can see life as endless struggle to perform tasks which are essentially meaningless. Camus believed that much of what we do seems to be meaningful because we are conscious beings unlike every other living thing. These meanings reside only in our minds and not in the universe out there. You think a lion, an elephant or for that matter any other living thing ever cared about the meaning of their lives?

What could be the meaning and purpose of the universe? It probably is there but for no purpose. Since we are conscious beings, we find meaning and purpose in everything. I think, that might be the cause of many emotions and stresses of life that deprive us from living it better and fully. In fact, to achieve many of those make believe purposes of life, not only have we made our own lives difficult but have also caused grave damage to our environment and threatened the existence of other living beings.

PS: It would be interesting to note that Camus died in a car accident at the age of 47 years after he decided to forgo a flight and take a ride in his friend’s car instead
